No real problems this week as we produced a '3rd Gear' performance, doing just what was required to win the match. We started the game well, controlling the early possesion and looking as 3 mins later the ball dropped to Sam Willis on the penalty spot and he drilled a shot into the corner and claim his 8th goal of the season - 1-1. Despite continuing to control the game we went in at half time level.
A couple of changes at half time saw Sam Azu make way for debutant Will Fry and Josh Harvey continued his comeback from injury replacing Owen Evans.
Will Fry was to prove pivotal in all that was good about our 2nd half performance, seeking out the ball and using his passing ability and excellent ball control to great effect. Within 10 mins of his arrival we were in the lead. He picked up the ball on the half way line and cut outside his man sending a searching ball down the line to Daniel Swabey, he quickly passed inside to Sam Willis, who returned the favour as he made his run through on goal - Swabey cooly slotted the ball home as the 'keeper advanced, 2-1.
Next, a fine solo run from Christopher Viney coming over from his wide right berth to the left, came ever so close to a great goal sadly his cross-cum-shot went inches wide.
The next goal was the move of the match. Caine Morse played a ball up to Daniel Gibbins on the halfway line, he cut inside and laid it off to Charlie Foulkes. Foulkes played the ball out left to Will Fry, Fry went past his man to the edge of the box, shimmied and weighted a perfect pass into Foulkes who had continued his run and made no mistake as he hit the ball across the 'keeper into the net, a 5 pass move to make it 3-1!
Goal number 4 came again from good work from Will Fry, probing down the left exchanging passes with Charlie Foulkes, receiving the ball back as Daniel Swabey made a great run off the shoulder of the last man - as the keeper came out Swabey poked the ball home, 4-1 and we were buzzing now.
Minutes later Daniel Gibbins skipped past his marker and teed up Charlie Foulkes for a 20 yard screamer - only for the 'keeper to tip over - a fine save.
We took our foot off the gas as the minutes ticked down and allowed Rumney to get a consolation goal - well worked though it was - to end the match 4-2.
Special mentions this week:
Will Fry - An excellent debut - welcome to the club!
Daniel Swabey - 10 goals in 10 games, well done the Swabester!
Callum Patten - just keeps performing every week, well done CB.

Pentwyn Dynamos 1 - 4 St Albans

A close game that could have gone either way right up until the last 20 mins. A difficult start before a ball was kicked as although 95% of the pitch was in excellent condition, there was a small section in the far penalty area with heavy surface water causing concern. A big thank you to the parents who worked so hard with buckets, brushes, garden forks and anything else we could find of use!
We started the first half in fine form and controlled the early exchanges and if it wasnt for a couple of borderline offside decisions, could have taken the lead. As the half progressed Charlie Foulkes and Sam Willis were battling in the midfield, holding their own, Daniel Gibbins and Daniel Swabey were working hard up front. At the back Bradley Preece was rarely troubled and when called upon was always in charge,Lloyd Richards was putting in another excellent performance at Centre back and Callum Patten was everywhere. St Albans came more into it and the game became more equal and half time saw the score still 0-0 - only the second time this season that we havent scored in the first half.
We started the second half as we finished the first and kept up the pressure. This was to pay dividends as a Caine Morse corner - inswinging from the left - skimmed off the challenging defenders heads under pressure from Sam Willis, the ball dropped to Daniel Gibbins and he flicked it over the line with his heel. 1-0 and we were looking pretty good. Then came a corner for St Albans, we failed to mark our men and allowed their player to ghost in and make it 1-1. The last 20 mins were a different game as St Albans took the initiative and piled on the pressure - within 5 mins it was 2-1 and heads went down. At 2-1 down we did have a period of pressure - sadly though a box scramble ended in their clearing the ball.
Set pieces were to prove our undoing and another corner was poorly defended and the resulting ball back in was headed in at the far post for 3-1.
St Albans were good for their win but the fourth goal was very debatable as their wide man took the ball down the right to the byline the ball crossed the line, the ref didnt call it and they scored from the cross following the confusion - our own fault really as we should have played to the whistle.
A few special mentions from today -
Great to see Josh Harvey make his comeback following 6 matches out with injury.
Callum Patten was once again excellent - well done CB!
Lloyd Richards nearly faultless at centre back.
Luck wasnt with us today - but we will keep improving.

Following on from a disapointing defeat last week we were looking for an improved performance against our local rivals - A table topping Llanedeyrn side that were unbeaten so far this season - having only dropped 2 points. We got it!
From the first whistle we were up for it, closing them down and not allowing them space to play when we didnt have the ball, and passing and moving with a quick tempo when in posession. After bossing the first 20 minutes we got our reward when Daniel Swabey's cross-cum-shot from the left corner of the area found its way inside the far post - 1-0.
We now sensed our chance to inflict a first defeat on Llanedeyrn and took the game to them at every opportunity. A corner from the right was driven in by Caine Morse - and following a box scramble Sam Willis was on hand to poke the ball home for 2-0. Some great saves over the next 10 mins from Llanedeyrn's 'keeper kept them in the contest and their confidence began to grow.
Llanedeyrn now started to show their ability and started to fight back, getting their midfield more involved and began to get the ball to their strikers. A powerful run into the box by their No. 7 saw us backing off and we were punished with a great finish into the top right hand corner. 2-1 and game on!
Our 'keeper Bradley Preece made a great save from a tricky swerving shot that dipped just as it approached and the half time whisle blew.
Half time and 2-1, No stern words this week - Just 'More of the same please lads!'
The second half was closer than the first for 20 mins as the game became more end to end, the main difference was our defence - Lloyd Richards was magnificent at centre half, Sam Azu never let their pacy striker out of his sight, Owen Evans hassled and harried at every opportunity and Caine Morse floating in front of them protecting and shoring things up when needed. Up at the other end we were testing their keeper more and he made several impressive saves - in my opinion their man of the match.
With 15 mins left we re-took the control we had in the first half and looked to make sure of the victory. The ball dropped to Daniel Swabey - 20 yards out, he set himself and hooked a shot high up and over the keeper into the back of the net - 3-1!
We were buzzing now as we started to sense more goals, Charlie Foulkes driving us forward, Callum Patten making it tick with intelligent passing and Christopher Viney linking well with Daniel Gibbins down the right flank.
With minutes remaining Charlie Foulkes received the ball just inside Llanederyn half and - as they backed off - he rifled a stunning shot from all of 25 yards right into the top right hand corner to make it 4-1 and a cap and excellent victory - moving us to within one point of the league leaders.

A close match for the most part but Maindy just shaded it and deserved their win, but it could have been a very different result had we capitalized on all our posession in the first 20 mins. We started the match playing our high tempo 'pass and move' game, playing the first 10 mins almost entirely in the Maindy half, but despite creating several chances failed to score. We did eventually take the lead when Sam Willis received the ball inside the area, turned his man superbly and was brought down - Penalty!
Skipper Charlie Foulkes stepped up and stroked the ball into the bottom right hand corner - 1-0!
As half time approached Maindy began to get a grip on the match and were soon level, a shot from outside the box was only parried by Keeper Bradley Preece, allowing a tap in for Maindy - 1 all.
The second half was a different story - almost a complete reversal of the first - as Maindy came at us with real purpose. Despite a re shuffle at the back with Owen evans coming on for Ellis Dunsford, we couldnt get our defensive game going, failing to close down and allowed Maindy to play in front of us. Despite Maindy's dominance the score remained 1-1 and we held on. A Maindy throughball cut us open at the back and they burst trough to make it 2-1.
Looking for fresh legs after an exhausting game Callum Patten moved into midfield and Caine Morse came off for Ben Price. Christopher Viney made way for Ryan Butler on the right of midfield and Tom Hearn replaced Bradley Preece in goal. Unfortunatley this made little difference as Maindy sensed our heads going down and made it 3-1 with 10 mins remaining.
We did find a second wind and the last 5 mins were spent in Maindy' s half as we tried and tried to reduce the deficit and make it a difficult last few mins but Maindy stayed strong and claimed a deserved victory.

A Jekyll & Hide performance today - at times we were great and at others frustrating! We started off well, dominating the possession and playing the first 5 mins in Llanrumneys half. We made our dominance count with a goal from Daniel Swabey - a through ball from Daniel Gibbins and cool finish into the bottom corner.
We continued to dominate but got caught on the break and Llanrumney's centre forward burst through - only to be pulled down by our keeper Bradley Preece in a desperate last attempt to stop him - Penalty!
Their number 10 spotted the ball and cooly despatched the spot kick - 1-1.
Within minutes we soon had a spot kick of our own, following a hand ball in the box. Skipper Charlie Foulkes stepped up, sent the keeper the wrong way but put it just wide of the right post.
Llanrumney had the bit between their teeth now and we found ourselves 2-1 down on 25 mins. The pendulum theme continued as Sam Willis drew us level on 28 mins slotting home as the keeper rushed out, in off the post and 2-2! we were ahead within 2 mins as Sam Willis's low drive was deflected off a defender into the bottom left hand corner -3-2. We sensed we were taking control again but our concentration lapsed as our failure to track back allowed a soft goal and Llanrumney drew level, 3-3.With half time approaching, we gained a throw in on the left flank, a Christopher Viney special was launched into the box - only half cleared - and the ball dropped to Daniel Gibbins who volleyed first time into the bottom right hand corner, 4-3 as the half time whistle blew.
For the second week in a row I had a few stern words for the boys - the game should have been out of site with the chances we had created but somehow the score line disagreed!
A much improved second half as we played our football, passing and moving - keeping our shape and cutting through Llanrumney at will. An excellent move as Daniel Gibbins lay off to Sam Willis allowed him to burst into the penalty area, cut the ball back to skipper Charlie Foulkes - who made no mistake, 5-3.
We were buzzing now and 2 mins later Daniel Swabey made it 6-3 and the game looked over - yet another lapse in concentration let Llanrumney back in, 6-4. Time for a few changes as Sam Azu came on to give Owen Evans a well earned rest and Ellis Dunsford making way for Kearan Ferrao at right back.
The substitution proved inspired as with 5 mins Sam Azu pounced on a loose ball in a box scramble to poke the ball home to make it 7-4, that's 2 in 2 for Mr. Azu now!
One last change as Tom Hearn replaced Bradley Preece in goal.
One last change as Tom Hearn replaced Bradley Preece in goal.
Again we thought we had done enough, but Llarumney came back at us- their number 10 had given us a real run for our money all morning - and he made it 7-5.
A sloppy deflected goal in the last minute made the scoreline 7-6.
The scoreline could have been very different - Daniel Gibbins hit the post with a header, Owen Evans hit the post with a great shot from the edge of the area, and Llanrumney's keeper made several excellent saves - and of couse the penalty miss. This was our 5th straight win and moves us up to 2nd in the league - well done boys!

Gibbins (2)
Following our memorable victory against Rhiwbina, we couldn't wait to play again - so we should have guessed that our fixture (Sat Sept 19th) against Thornhill would be called off and the following Tuesday's training would be cancelled due to rain!
So, having not kicked a ball in anger in 10 days we took the field against a Whitchurch side that had been through a tough start to the season, losing heavily several times.
Following a tentative start we found ourselves ahead inside 10 mins when - following Whitchurch's failure to clear from a corner - the ball dropped to Sam Azu, who volleyed into the roof of the net from the edge of the 6 yard box - 1 Nil!
Everyone thought that the floodgates were about to open - This was not the case. We failed to play our passing game, lacked concentration and weren't contesting enough in the middle of the park, and within 10 mins Whitchurch equalised with a well taken goal. Whitchurch now started to find their way into the game and just before halftime made it 2-1.
Following an earbashing at half time, we went straight at them and equalised 3 mins into the 2nd half - a trademark Daniel Swabey finish. Whitchurch came back at us though and restored their lead almost straight away with a long range effort that left 'keeper Bradley Preece with no chance. It was time to look for a few leaders to step up as we stared an unlikely defeat in the face! Callum Patten moved from left back into midfield and started to get our passing game going linking up well with Charlie Foulkes, ending with a box scramble and the ball dropping to Sam Willis - who smashed the ball into the net - 3-3!
Time for some changes - An injury to right back Owen Evans saw Ellis Dunsford take his place and Bradley Preece was replaced in goal by Tom Hearn, Ben Price replaced Christopher Viney to make his debut.
Finally we seemed to have worn Whitchurch down and following a free kick, the Whitchurch 'keeper could only parry to Daniel Gibbins who pounced to head home making it 4-3. Time for another change and Sam Azu went off to allow Ryan Butler to make his debut. With only 2 mins remaining Daniel Gibbins picked up the ball on the edge of the box and went at the last defender, skipped past him and slotted the ball into the corner as the 'keeper advanced. Final score 5-3.
We made hard work of this and will have to learn how to keep playing our passing game, even when the opposition try to stop us playing football.

Thursday 17 Sept 2009
Parc Coed-y-Nant
Pentwyn Dynamos 3 - 2 Rhiwbina
Swabey
Gibbins
Foulkes
A close encounter saw little goalmouth action in the first half, with battles being contested mainly in the middle of the park. Charlie Foulkes and Caine Morse were holding their own and all was pretty even, until 5 mins before half time - when Daniel Gibbins played a slide-rule pass through to the jet-healed Daniel Swabey he cooly drew the goalkeeper and rifled the ball into the back of the net.
Rhiwbina didnt take this lying down and came straight back at us from the start of the second half, levelling inside the first few mins. The parity was shortlived though as we came back at them from the restart - with Christopher Viney taking the ball down the right wing and sending a teasing ball into the box. Rhiwbina failed to clear and the ball dropped to Daniel Swabey, who shot forcing a great save from the keeper. The balled spilled out to Daniel Gibbins, who drilled the ball into the bottom left hand corner.
Once again Rhiwbina came at us and our defensive trio of Callum Patten, Lloyd Richards and Owen Evans blocked, tackled and closed down to keep us in the lead, keeper Bradley Preece playing almost as a sweeper at times to thwart anything that did get beyond them.
We rode the storm and with 15 mins left the ball fell to Charlie Foulkes on the left flank, he looked up , cut inside and curled the ball into the top right hand corner from all of 25 yards - 3-1!
Rhwbina didnt give up - they kept coming at us and with 5 mins left on the clock, Foulkes was adjudged - Harshly! - to have handled the ball. What folowed was an outstanding free kick from 30 yards straight into the top left hand corner, that gave Preece no chance. 3-2 .
The final 5 mins were constant pressure but we held on to win against one of the A division's top teams.

Waterhall
Fairwater 2 - 3 Pentwyn Dynamos
Gibbins
Willis
Swabey
A hard fought game saw us 1 nil down to a debatable penalty inside 15 mins. We rallied and began to play the Dynamos way - passing & moving - and began to take a foothold. A combination of good defending and great goalkeeping from Fairwater kept the score at 1-0 at halftime. We came out cold for the second half and quickly found ourselves 2 nil down against a team really finding their rhythm, but weathered the storm and began to fight back.
A solo effort from Daniel Gibbins, taking on 3 defenders and cooly slotting home had us back in it with 20 mins to go - but could we mount an unlikely comeback?
Yes we could! With 15 mins remaining we really started to dominate, Fairwater put 5 across the midfield and battled to hold on, but Gibbins picked out a great run from Sam Willis with a ball over the top. Willis still had it all to do as the ball dropped 25 yards out - but hammered a stunning volley into the roof of the net - 2-2!
We were really in control now as Fairwater heads dropped and kept piling on the pressure and with minutes reamaining, they failed to clear and the ball dropped to Daniel Swabey - he made no mistake and secured all 3 points.

St Mellons
Rumney 1 - 4 Pentwyn Dynamos
O.G.
Gibbins
Swabey
Willis
A poor start saw us a goal down inside 3 mins and thoughts of the previous game were at the forefront of a few minds on the touchline. There was no need to worry however, as an own goal soon had us level and a goals from Sam Willis, Daniel Gibbins and Daniel Swabey ensured, what was in the end, a comfortable victory - our first in competative football.
Outstanding performances in defence from Callum Patten and Lloyd Richards, commanding displays in midfield from skipper Charlie Foulkes, Caine Morse and wide man Christopher Viney added to great finishing from the aforementioned forward trio made it a match to remember.
Saturday 5 Sept 2009
Parc Coed-y-Nant (Pentwyn Leisure Centre)
Pentwyn Dynamos 0 - 5 Maindy Corries
A close game for the most part, but heads went down after going 2-0 down. We ended up conceding 4 goals in the last 15 mins. A harsh introduction to the 11 a side game but we will learn from it.
