Maes y Coed Road

Marlboro Sports Black 4-3 Pentwyn Dynamos
                                                     Willis
                                                                      Fry
                                                                      Prytherch

This was a big game for both sides with both teams well placed to win the league if they won their remaining fixtures. This was a great match from the off - I'm sure any neutrals watching thoroughly enjoyed it (my blood pressure didnt!!!) and both sides created chances early doors.

We started to have the edge and got a well deserved lead when Sam Willis pounced on a bouncing ball in the box and hammered an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net.

We continued to press but got caught napping at the back and Marlboro equalised with a well taken goal from Jake.

This was prooving to be every bit as tight as I predicited - there were battles all over the park and no-one was giving an inch.

We took the lead when Daniel Gibbins contolled a high ball excellently, held it up with his back to goal and teed up Will Fry who's shot took a bit of a 'bobble' and went into the corner. A nice moment for Will against his former team.

2-1 at half time and we deserved it - I told the boys to keep playing their passing game and 35 more mins of maximum effort could just be enough to win this one.

We went out and carried on where we left off and it was looking good - Sam Willis was working hard on the right, Charlie Foulkes and Caine Morse were controlling the midfield and the once again impressive Steffan Prytherch was becoming the catalyst for all things good.  Steffan capped a great individual performance by putting us 3-1 up with a great shot from the edge of the box - the wind holding the ball up just enough to drop it under the bar.

We then took our foot off the pedal slightly - possibly due to tiredness and partly thinking we had done enough to win already - and Marlboro really started to pressure us.

It became apparent that the last 20 mins were going to be extremely tough. Marlboro began launching balls over the top for their big centre forward, Aled, to latch onto and this made our defence uncomfortable. Time after time the ball was hit high over the top but our central defenders Ellis Dunsford and Lloyd Richards got a head on it or cleared well.

The inevitable happened and we got caught - a ball over the top evaded keeper Bradley Preece and Aled tapped into an empty net for 2-3.

Minutes later Bradley Preece pulled off a brilliant save, down to his right, to deny Marlboro an equaliser.
Marlboro continued to come at us - they were in charge now - and more uncertainty at the back - failure to clear our lines, saw the ball drop to Nick who shot excellently into the top left hand corner to level it.

We had a chance to regain the lead, when impressive substitute Christopher Viney, burst through and as he swung his boot the ball took a nasty bobble - forcing him to mis-hit his shot wide.

Queue what I now call the 'Dynamos Panic' - when a team of good footballers forget everything we talked about pre-match and half time - and lose all self belief - allowing the opposition to pen us in and lay seige on our penalty area. This allowed Marlboro to snatch victory with only 10 mins left.

That said, the Marlboro winner was truly magnificent - another long ball found Aled, who shrugged off two defenders, took the ball on the run and lashed a thunderbolt into the top right hand corner.

In truth, we were unlucky to lose this one, but you cant argue when a team comes back from 1-3 down to win 4-3 and if the roles were reversed I would be over the moon.

Mark's boys did him proud - as did mine - and If we now can't win the league I hope that Marlboro do, they have the great combination of talent, pace and power and can adapt their game better than any other side we have faced this season.

Special Mentions -

The whole team  - Boys you were fantatstic for 75% of the match - 6 games in 12 days (including 5 wins) maybe took its toll towards then end. We just need to believe that little bit more and learn to keep calm under pressure - it's all there, you just need to BELIEVE IN YOURSELVES!!!

Pentwyn Dynamos 4 - 3 Fairwater
Gibbins (3)
Swabey

Before the match I must admit I was concerned. We were without Steffan, Will and Caine - 3 big players for us who all would have started. A quick juggle of players/positions and it was a case of 'lets see what happens....'.

The boys went out and played some breath taking football in the first 10 mins and we took the lead when a great ball over the top from Sam Willis was tracked by Daniel Gibbins who superbly lobbed the keeper from the edge of the box.

We continued to press and were 2 nil up 5 mins later - a Daniel Swabey shot was half saved by the keeper and Daniel Gibbins pounced on the rebound.

Danny was really looking the part today and completed his hattrick with an excellent goal - played through from the corner of the box, racing onto it and - as the keeper came out - drilled the ball into the top left hand corner for 3 nil.

The boys were really going for it and it was 4 nil 5 mins before half time as Daniel Swabey poached after uncertainty from Fairwaters keeper.

Fairwater grabbed what looked to be a consolation goal - with a superbly struck shot from the edge of the box-  just before half time making it 4-1.

Daniel Gibbins had a 4th goal chalked off for offside - an incorrect decision as I was in line with him and he was clearly onside - but these things happen and at the time it seemed unimportant.

How wrong I was!  The second half was a completely different story. Fairwater came at us time and again and inevitably scored again to make it 4-2. We allowed them to pen us in and had to defend for our lives at times - but they still managed a third goal, controversially as the impressive Ellis Dunsford cleared off the line but the ref gave the goal. Several spectators stated after the game that the ball didnt cross the line - but these things happen!

At 4-3 the boys became panicked and clearances were missed and we put ourselves under needless pressure, but we kept battling.

We squandered 2 good chances - late on - to put the game beyond them and they continued to press us.
Our keeper Bradley Preece made 3 magnificent saves to protect our lead late on - a double save from point blank range and a brave save with his legs as their strikers challenged.

We defended well enough with bodies blocking shots and last ditch clearances to take the points.

Special mentions:

Daniel Gibbins - a superb hattrick taking his tally to 17 goals in 20 games.
Callum Patten - played out of position, battled all day and really enjoyed it!
Ellis Dunsford - another who played out of position and did really well.
Bradley Preece - magnificent saves to protect our lead late on.
Thursday 22nd April 2010
Parc Coed y Nant

Pentwyn Dynamos 7-1 Thornhill Athletic
Willis (2)
Fry (2)
Foulkes
Gibbins
Butler

An excellent performance from start to finish. The boys played some great football and opened the scoring on 20 mins with a magnificent goal from Charlie Foulkes - a thunderbolt from 25 yards that nearly broke the net!
Once we got one, we knew we would get a few more as we took control of the game. It was 2 nil in no time as a ball over the top was latched onto by Will Fry who judged the bounce and - as the keeper advanced -executed a beautifully measured lob.
Unbelievably they left Will free a couple of minutes later and he once again ran onto the ball over the top and lobbed him for a carbon copy of his first goal!
4 nil came just before half time as Sam Willis received the ball on the edge of the box and slotted into the bottom left hand corner.
We continued to play our football throughout the second half and - with the game already won - started to enjoy stroking the ball around, every player wanting the ball and most of the time receiving it!
Sam Willis completed his brace to make it 5 nil with around 25 minutes left and I made a few substitutions over the next 5 mins- enter Sam Azu, Ben Price, Ellis Dunsford and Ryan Butler.
All 4 players got right into the game and we picked up where we left off. It was 6 nil soon after as a throughball was latched onto by Daniel Gibbins who coolly chipped the keeper as he advanced.
Thornhill werent finished though and pulled one back as we relaxed a little bit too much- to keep us on our toes.
Ryan Butler completed the route making it 7 nil and an all round great performance.
Special mentions:
Charlie Foulkes and Steffan Prytherch in midfield - these two clearly enjoy playing together and its working wonders for us!
Sam Willis - two great goals (4 goals in 2 games mate - well done)
Will Fry - 2 deft finishes and a great display wide left.
Ryan Butler - another goal (3 in 2 games - you are really improving and it doesnt go unnoticed)

Our 5th match in 10 days - and it looked like it! short on numbers and missing 4 first team regulars but we started well and were 2 nil up inside 15 mins with goals from Ryan Butler and Sam Willis. It went stale from there - either the boys thought it was going to be easy and stopped giving it 100%, or playing catch up on our fixtures is taking its toll. I believe it was somewhere in between.

Fair play to Thornhill - they sensed this and started to have a go at us - and got their rewards - it was 2-2 within 5 mins of our second goal going in!
This shook us up momentarily and we resumed playing our football - briefly- just long enough for the impressive Ryan Butler to grab his second. His first touch looked too heavy but he showed great pace to catch up and slot it past the keeper.

We switched off again and Thornhill made us pay making it 3-3 just before half time.

The second half was an exercise in 'long ball'. Thornhill bombarded us every time they got the ball - lumping it up the field and constantly putting us under pressure. The boys could not resist the temptation to 'lump it' back! We must learn that in these games you cannot get sucked into such tactics and must continue to play our football regardless.

When we did attempt to pass it the pitch didnt help. In the boys' defence this may be why we played the long ball so much as the pitch was rock solid with very little grass. We managed to secure the 3 points when the ref played an advantage - albeit in unorthodox fashion!- following a clear handball, the ball ran through to Sam Willis who poked home the winner.

We were lucky to win this one - Thornhill did enough for a point - but the cliche says good teams lose even when not at their best, so I will stay positive.
Its Thornhill again - this time at home - on Thursday and hopefully we will have our full squad back and put in a better peformance.

Special mention:

Ryan Butler - full of energy and his first goals for the club - well done Ryan!

Llanedeyrn Bulldogs 1 - 2 Pentwyn Dynamos
                                                    Willis
                                                                     Swabey

The big derby match - always an encounter - school friends and neighbours become rivals for 70 mins.
This match didnt disappoint - it was poised on a knife edge for the entire game. The first 20 mins were mainly contested in the midfield with both sides battling and holding their own. Few chances were created as both sides sounded each other out.

We took the lead on 25 mins when a ball over the top caught Llanedeyrn sleeping and Sam Willis was quickest to react - I say quickest but this felt to me as if it happened in slow motion! as Sam controlled the ball set himself and slotted the ball home.

The battle continued and Steffan Prytherch and Charlie Foulkes began to boss the midfield, giving the whole team confidence that came through in our football. Half time came and the score remained 0-1.

The second half was more open as chances began to happen for both sides but still the score remained 0-1.
Our defence held firm until Llanedeyrn scored a carbon copy goal of our opener - a ball over the top to Jacob Scott who made no mistake to level the score.

This was now a test of how much we wanted it, as for the first time in the match Llanedeyrn took charge. They were coming at us, looking dangerous and really testing our metal. Time for a change - Caine Morse coming on to add that extra bit of steel to the midfiled.

We found our second wind and began counter attacking with real purpose. Daniel Swabey had a chance to seal it but shot wide and it looked as though a stalemate was on the cards. Then Llanedeyrn had their chance - a stinging shot from the edge of the box excellently saved by Bradley Preece.

Another chance  for us - a Caine Morse volley looked goalbound but for a great save from Llanedeyrn keeper James Newman.

As the seconds ticked away - we were deep in injury time - a scramble on the edge of the area saw the ball bounce in front of Daniel Swabey. He steadied himself and sent off a rocket of a volley into the top left hand corner - winning the match and sealing all 3 points.

A truly memorable performance - our 4th match in 7 days - and thats the double over our neighbours this season.

Special mentions:

Steffan Prytherch and Charlie Foulkes - midfield maestros ran the show.
Bradley Preece - another commanding performance in goal.
Callum Patten - Wanted this victory so much and contributed greatly.
Daniel Swabey - I will remember that winning goal for a long time!

Thursday 15th April 2010

Eglwys Newydd Primary School

AFC Whitchurch  1 - 2  Pentwyn Dynamos
                                              Fry
                                                          Swabey

Our third match in 5 days saw us play Whitchurch at Eglwys Newydd Primary School. A big, physical Whitchurch side took the game to us from the whistle and - although we were playing all the football - took the lead with a sweetly struck shot from outside the area. We continued to play our passing game, whilst Whitchurch used the small pitch to their advantage, constantly playing long balls up to their big, pacy strikers - putting us under pressure with just one strike of the ball!

We kept our heads and the boys didnt get sucked into the long ball tactics they were facing. We kept the ball on the 'deck' when we had it and battled when we didnt. By now Charlie Foulkes and Steffan Prytherch were taking control of the midfield and you felt an equaliser was coming. When we did draw level it was a goal worth waiting for - Will Fry executing a beautifully struck shot from the edge of the box - claiming his first goal for the club - and well deserved it was.

We now were bossing the game, but still Whitchurch's bigger players were giving us a real rough ride and were counter attacking with real menace.

Just before half time we took the lead - great work from Callum Patten from left back - as he took control of the ball, Whitchurch backed off, so he kept going, cut inside and sent a lovely through ball for Daniel Swabey. Swabes made no mistake as the keeper came out, stroking the ball into the right of the net.

2-1 at half time and we knew we were in a game. The second half was much the same as the first. We were playing well, but Whitchurch were bullying us and looking dangerous when counter attacking. Both sides missed chances and we really were hanging on in the last 5 mins, with keeper Bradley Preece giving his bravest performance of the season - diving at strikers' feet and claiming high balls under pressure.

We hung on and came away with our hardest earned three points of the season.

Special mentions:

All of you boys! you showed great heart coming from behind and battled against a really physical - and at times cynical - Whitchurch side. I hope you now see that our small size can be unimportant if you keep playing your football and give 100%.
Our match tomorrow (Saturday 17th April) has been re-arranged due to Marlboro's cup semi final win, meaning they now play on Sunday in the cup final.

We now play Llanedeyrn Bulldogs away at Llanedeyrn High School.

Parc Coed y Nant

Pentwyn Dynamos  1-4  Marlboro Black
Foulkes

A really tight game for the most part - It was 0-0 for the first 20 mins with the game poised on a knife edge. Marlboro took the lead from a well rehearsed corner routine that brought confusion upon our defence
who failed to clear their lines and the ball was bundled over the line for 1-0. It didnt stay that way for long as our skipper, Charlie Foulkes, scored a scorching free kick from 25 yards to draw us level.

Another defensive error gifted Marlboro a goal as the ball bounced over 2 defenders and our keepers heads, leaving an empty net for the Marlboro striker to make it 2-1.

The game stayed close and we nearly equalised with another Charlie Foulkes rocket - but unfortunately it sailed just wide. The match stayed close, contested mainly in midfield, with both sides playing well - but Marlboro shading it. Steffan Prytherch went close from distance but an equaliser just wouldnt come for us.

We gifted Marlboro a third goal when we failed to clear and a mis-hit clearance went straight into the path of the oncoming Marlboro striker - who made no mistake 3-1. The fourth goal could have been avoided also, but yet again we became panicked - and allowed Marlboro a second bite of the cherry, failing to clear our lines - and they completed a 4-1 victory.

In truth, the better side won, but 4-1 flattered them as we contested the game extremely well for three quarters of it. Our failings got the better of us again as we lacked self belief, became panicked needlessly and too many individual errors cost us dearly.

Marlboro were excellent, not just in their play, but their all round attitude. I believe they are currently the A division's best side. I believe Mark' s boys are going to have the top 2 looking over their shoulders anxiously for the remainder of the season!

Special mentions:

Charlie Foulkes - excellent performance and a great goal.
Steffan Prytherch - looked dangerous every time he got the ball and great feet.
Bradley Preece - one of the best saves - down to his right and around the post - I have seen from an under 12 keeper.

Pentwyn Dynamos  3 - 1  Marshfield
Gibbins (2)
Swabey

A beautiful day for football, the sun was shining and we couldnt wait to get started - a couple of slight changes due to illness and unavailabilty of 2 regulars - but still a strong line up.

We bossed the match from the off, attacking at every opportunity with Christopher Viney looking particularly dangerous down the right hand side. We were ahead on 10 mins when a deflected shot looped over the defence and - with the keeper advancing - Daniel Gibbins bravely challenged and scored with a thumping header - then nearly had his head knocked off as the keeper's attempted punch hit him in the eye! He nearly did it again 5 mins later but it just went wide - lightning doesnt strike twice!

We continued to control the game but couldnt add to our lead. Marshfield equalised against the run of play from a corner. We were at 6's and 7's and their player nudged the ball over the line. Our keeper Bradley Preece's apeals for handball were ignored and the match was level at 1-1. This Marshfield team are much improved and they were showing that they are not the same team that lost heavily several times at the start of the season. We were going to have to work for this result.

Daniel Gibbins and Chris Viney were now linking at every opportunity down the right hand side, Sam Willis - playing out of position in midfield - was always available and Daniel Swabey's pace up front was looking a threat. This was  the factor in the second goal as Daniel Gibbins played a through ball into Swabes and his accelleration took him away from his marker and he slotted past the keeper for 2-1 at half time.

The second half was even more of a battle - Marshfield were not giving us time on the ball and we really had to work. Lloyd Richards, Ellis Dunsford, Callum Patten and Owen Evans were excellent at the back - never really letting Marshfield get a shot on goal, closing down and throwing bodies in front of shots.

We finally put the game to bed with 15 mins left with almost a carbon copy of the second goal with roles reversed. Daniel Swabey played a great through ball to Daniel Gibbins who took a touch past his man and - as the keeper advanced - cooly slotted home for 3-1. An exhausted Sam Willis was then replaced by Ryan Butler, who got right into the action and impressed yet again from the bench.

A good result off the back of two poor ones - lets keep this up now boys and see how far up the table we can finish. Special mentions for:

Callum Patten - works so hard and his desire is second to none.

Lloyd Richards - the main man at the back and is making tackling an art form.

Christopher Viney - broke his collar bone in December and was out for around 3 months - and has come back better than ever.

Daniel Gibbins - 2 great goals and made the other. Marshfield must hate him- 5 goals in the last 2 games against them!

Parks Pitches Update-

A decision has been made regarding all games from Thursday 1st April until Tuesday 6th April 2010, all games are off. This is due mainly to the level of water already lying on pitches, and also to the fact that they haven't been able to mark out pitches either by hand or machine. A decision will be made on Wednesday 7th by 10am for the following week.
